Westvleteren: The Silent Brand King

Westvleteren

What does this crest have to do with advertising? Everything. The brand behind it is one of the world’s most famous and it has never been advertised. Through persistence and staying true to their values, they have built one of the most sought after beers on this planet.

Not to put the cart before the horse, a little background info. Westvleteren is actually an abbay filled with monks who brew beer. They have also taken a vow of silence; except for when they talk on the “Beer Phone“.

See, to buy the beer you have to make a reservation before they will sell it to you. If you are lucky enough to get a monk on the phone, you can only buy the beer they are making that month and you only buy two cases of it (production is limited to 5 000 bottles/month).

At 33 Euros, it isn’t exactly a bargain either. But it looks like it’s worth it.

Even with all of these restrictions, people from all across Europe drive to the brewery to buy this stuff. Its brand is stronger than ever and believe it or not they don’t have a media department, lack an ad agency and seem to do okay without the Guiness-sized budget.

Some products can be so good they sell themselves. Luckily, Budweiser has a massive advertising budget.
